Tube Swaging – Custom Diameter Tubing and Pipe Supplies
Tube swaging services and DOM (“Drawn-Over-Mandrel”) services are available direct from Tubular USA to meet your custom tubing diameters. Forced diameter tubing specifications are required to meet your supply requirements; send us your requirements for internal and external diameters and tolerances. Industry-standard tubing and pipe lengths are available for swaging, and custom lengths are available. Learn about Tubular USA’s product services.

Common Swaging Techniques
Tubular USA employs standard tube swaging and DOM techniques for custom tubing and pipe requirements. DOM and swaging are used to finished steel pipes and tubes (and to reduce any metal loss), but the processes work well with our supplied products. Common swaging techniques include:
- Tube swaging or general swaging – a common tubing and pipe manufacturing process that “draws” the tubing or forces the tubing material through a confining die to reduce the overall tubing or pipe diameter; all custom swaging conforms to ASTM standards
- Rotary swaging – or “radial forging” is another common method for reducing pipe and tubing diameters for closer tolerances
- Two or more dies are commonly used to hammer or flatten a round work piece that is drawn through a swaging machine on a draw bench – this is the most common technique for pipes using precious metals or more expensive metallic materials
- This process is usually performed as a cold drawn or cold drawn butt-weld
- Common techniques for rotary swaging are “tagging” and “butt swaging”
- DOM or “Drawn-Over-Mandrel” tubing technique – this process is ideal for custom tubing and pipes requiring non-standard diameters and close tolerances
- DOM tubing has higher mechanical properties than standard welded pipes or tubing
- After cooling and normalizing, tubing is cold drawn through dies to reduce diameters (ideal for close or tight tolerances)
- Common usages include augers, hydraulic parts and cylinders, shock absorbers, vehicle exhaust pipes and for composite metal pipes or tubing for a variety of manufacturing and industrial applications
- All of our DOM products conform to ASTM A513 Type 5 Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) product standards or ASTM A512 Cold Drawn Butt-weld, and cold drawn seamless steel tubing product standards

Tube Swaging, Custom Tubing – Exceeding Industry Standards
All of our services conform to ASTM standards or exceed them. For welded tubing and galvanized angles, reapplication of selected finishes (or galvanization) completes the product for uniform consistency and durability. Review our extremely corrosion-resistant Zinc Flo-Coat®/Gatorshield® triple coating technique for the best outdoor protection.
